Chailey School, East Sussex

Situated in the heart of rural Sussex, Chailey School is a highly regarded 11–16 comprehensive with a proud tradition of academic achievement, inclusive values and a warm community ethos. With nearly 800 students on roll, the school has a reputation for exceptional pastoral care and rich extracurricular opportunities.

To further support outdoor learning and social engagement, Chailey School partnered with Streetspace Structures to create two additional high-quality covered spaces on their site. The goal was to provide students with sheltered areas that could be used flexibly throughout the school day, come rain or shine.

Two large ORION Barrel Vault Fabric Canopies were installed to meet this need at an impressive 15m x 11m and 20m x 10m.

Both structures feature robust powder-coated steel frames in the school’s distinctive green, as well as architectural tensile membrane roofs, allowing natural light to flood in while offering reliable protection from the elements. Integrated aluminium guttering and foundations were included to ensure durability and proper rainwater management, with the designs fully compliant with UK Building Regulations.

The clean, minimalist aesthetic allows the canopies to integrate seamlessly with the school’s existing architecture, adding to the overall visual appeal of the campus. The installation enables Chailey School to expand outdoor provision for students, supporting break times, informal learning and community events throughout the year.

This investment in outdoor infrastructure aligns with the Chailey School’s commitment to fostering confidence, curiosity and wellbeing among its pupils. Streetspace were delighted to work with the school on this project and look forward to collaborating again with the Chailey School in the future.
