Cycle Shelters & Parking

Cycle shelters are a valuable resource, taking many forms and representing a basic level of protection from the elements for cyclists at work, in education, and on the move. Typically situated in an enclosed area or within a secure site, cycle shelters are open type structures not generally suited to overnight storage with limited opportunities to increase security within the open design.

The provision of dry, secure facilities for students and staff to store their bikes is essential in encouraging the use of more sustainable forms of transportation on the journey to school or work. There is a wide range of cycle shelter types available to accommodate cycle stands and racks from semi-vertical, vertical and two-tier with single or double row format depending on storage capacity required and footprint available.

As sustainability strategies and urban planning evolve to reduce congestion and gridlock, the need for innovative, high-quality cycle parking products is increasing. Today’s cyclists should have confidence that their bicycles will be safely stored during work or school.Secure and well-planned bike parking facilities encourage more people to adopt sustainable forms of transport that contribute to reduced carbon emissions while promoting health and wellbeing. Providing cyclists with a designated storage area ensures that cycles are parked in an orderly manner and not causing obstruction to site users

Previous Cycle Shelter Projects

New Rickstones Academy, Witham

Streetspace CENTAUR CLS double row cycle shelters and CENTAUR ST cycle stands installed at The New Rickstones Academy in Witham, Essex provide 160 covered cycle spaces.

The modern, clean aesthetic was an important factor in the design selection criteria since the cycle shelters are a focal point of the campus, close to the road frontage. The open-ended frame and a curved roof design of CENTAUR CLS helped maintain an openness in the surrounding area and the large roof cover provides shelter during inclement weather. For added security of students and staff, the cycle shelter design helps maintain a clear view of the cycle parking area.

St Bartholomew’s School, Newbury

The CENTAUR CS and CLS cycle shelters installed at the St Bartholomew’s School in Newbury provide a total of 144 covered cycle spaces. This cycle shelter compound project required a modern, aesthetically pleasing shelter design that would complement the school architecture.

Galvanised ‘toast rack’ type cycle stands provide security for the cycles while the shelter roof panels provide covered circulation spaces between the stands.

Reading Blue Coat School, Berkshire

Looking to further reduce their carbon footprint and encourage more students to cycle to school, The Reading Blue Coat School commissioned the design and manufacture of a bespoke cycle shelter for up to 48 bikes.

Utilising the TRITON canopy design format for the shelter, Streetspace design and construction package included the removal of existing cycle shelters, new drainage, surfacing , installing drainage and the installation of stainless-steel cycle stands.

Medway Mail Centre, Rochester

CENTAUR CL semi-enclosed bicycle shelters and CENTAUR ST cycle stands provide secure storage, conveniently located close to the sorting office building entrance for Royal Mail staff. All shelters installed on the project have a galvanised and colour powder coated steelwork, finished to coordinate with bespoke shelters from Streetspace for motorcycle parking and smoking areas.

Specifying Cycle Parking

New developments will require a provision for cycle parking and the planning decision notice typically includes a condition which states the type and number of cycle parking spaces. Depending on the use class this requirement will be either long-stay bike parking for staff of businesses and residents, or short-stay bike parking for customers and visitors. There may also be a requirement for the cycle parking to be covered.

Limitations on the available footprint for cycle parking is often a challenge, particularly on high-density developments and there are bike racks designed specifically for these applications. Where undercrofts are the designated cycle parking area there will be considerations around operational height to be considered.

The Streetspace team has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the design and specification of cycle parking to help achieve the required criteria. Making it easy to specify exactly the right products, our downloadable CAD models include operational space requirements along with technical drawings and product data sheets for specific design and technical information.

Cycle Parking Types Available

Our CENTAUR ST cycle stands are typically used in outdoor settings, particularly with shelters and gated compounds, as a highly cost-effective solution. Both wheels and the frame can be locked to the stand with two locks, as recommended by Cycling UK.

CENTAUR SW Wall Mounted Cycle Racks are an excellent solution to consider when the available width for cycle parking space is limited, such as a narrow store or hallway.

CENTAUR SV Semi-Vertical Cycle Racks provide space efficient cycle parking at an optimum cost per square metre. The design enables narrower footprints to be utilised with cycles secured at 375 mm centres. CENTAUR SV is available in a number of standard configurations to suit the available space.

Two-tier bike racks offer maximum space efficiency of cycle parking where larger numbers of cycles are stored using individual cycle trays at alternating heights on both upper and lower levels. CENTAUR T2 Two-Tier Cycle Racks are designed with integral gas-assist ensuring safe, easy lifting and lowering of cycles to ground level.

Cycle Shelters

Installing cycle stands or racks within a shelter obviously increases protection from theft and also from inclement weather. Where higher levels of security are required cycle stores can be specified in many formats from individual lockers to cycle hubs. There is a broad range of cycle shelters and stores available from Streetspace to suit the specific application.
