Southfields Park, Loughborough – Charnwood Borough Council
As one of Loughborough’s most popular public green spaces, Southfields Park boasts open grassland, play areas, a well-used skatepark and even an outdoor gym. The park plays an important role in encouraging active lifestyles and community wellbeing to serve the entire community in the heart of Loughborough.
In line with their commitment to enhancing local amenities, Charnwood Borough Council commissioned two new canopies to improve year-round usability of the park and provide additional sheltered space for a range of activities.
Streetspace Structures were delighted to design, manufacture and install the new covered areas, delivering a practical but striking addition to this much-loved park, just a few minutes from the built-up Leicestershire town centre.
The larger of the two structures is an ORION Barrel Vault Cantilever Fabric Canopy, installed in two sections with an impressive, combined length of over 52 metres. It creates an expansive, light-filled covered area, perfect for community events, informal gatherings and sheltering from the Great British weather from time to time.
Complementing this is an ORION Conic Fabric Canopy, with a high central peak, replacing the existing bandstand in the park which was unused. Both canopies are constructed with robust steel frames, finished in a durable powder coating and topped with fire-rated tensile fabric which is UV-resistant while still offering a good balance of positive light transmission.
Streetspace also delivered associated groundworks, including foundation construction and reinstatement to match the existing surfacing. Optional anti-climb guards were included for added safety and security in this area of high footfall.
Both structures build on recent improvements at Southfields Park, including a new entrance space, upgraded lighting and resurfaced paths, as part of the council’s broader strategy to invest in inclusive, high-quality public environments. Streetspace were delighted to support with this project, up-levelling the local facilities to suit diverse community needs.
