Mammoth canopy covers student courtyard

One of the largest single projects undertaken by Kent-based Streetspace is currently underway at a Rochester school. With 1,000m2 of covered space, the £500k investment will transform The Thomas Aveling School creating a giant covered courtyard.

The multi-purpose area will be used for breakfast and dining as well as lesson break-out and, most importantly, an all-weather social space for the 1,100 students.

Tim Deacon, Streetspace Managing Director, said: “The courtyard redevelopment at The Thomas Aveling School is an excellent example of our design and build capability. Works access and design constraints have been a challenge for project delivery over the nine weeks on site and I’m very proud of the outstanding work from the team here at Streetspace and our partners in Australia and New Zealand.

“Now, close to completion, the scale and overall design aesthetic of the project is an impressive sight, with new split-level hard landscaping areas, revised access, LED lighting and of course the amazing tensile membrane canopy!”

The final project elements are to be completed in October half term.

For more than 20 years Streetspace has worked in the design and construction of public open space, developing projects across a broad range of sectors including housing associations and education.

Its projects include canopies and walkways, glazed structures, all-weather sports canopies, green roof buildings and tensile membrane structures.

Streetspace also own metroSTOR which creates outdoor storage including bin stores, bike and mobility scooter storage.
