Brakenhale School, Bracknell

Brakenhale School is a thriving 11 – 19 comprehensive academy in Bracknell, Berkshire, with over 1,100 students on roll. A cornerstone of the local community since opening in 1958, the school continues to build on its legacy of high aspiration and inclusivity, guided by the values of Aim High, Be Kind and Take Responsibility.

Following a major redevelopment in 2020 that saw the school move into a new building on Rectory Lane, Brakenhale sought to further enhance its outdoor facilities by creating a high-quality covered dining and social space. The project would provide additional capacity during busy lunchtimes while ensuring a versatile environment that could be used throughout the school day, whatever the weather.

Streetspace Structures worked closely with the school to design a structure that complemented the new architecture while meeting practical needs for durability and comfort. The chosen solution was a TRITON Maxx Polycarbonate Roof Canopy, measuring 17m x 10m and manufactured in the UK to BS EN 1090 standards.

The canopy’s free-standing steel frame and curved roof profile create a bright, open environment, with multiwall opal polycarbonate panels providing protection from UV and rain while allowing high levels of daylight. Powder-coated steelwork ensures long-term performance and a clean, modern finish that integrates seamlessly with surrounding buildings.

The installation included foundations, guttering and downpipes, toughened glazing and surface water drainage linked to the existing system. LED lighting, infrared heating and fire detection were also incorporated, ensuring safe, comfortable year-round use.

The new covered area has given Brakenhale a versatile space for dining, informal learning and social interaction. Its careful integration within the campus has created a visually consistent and practical addition that supports the school’s focus on wellbeing and high-quality facilities.
