ScopeORION Conic Tensile Canopy, 15.8m (L) x 9.8m (W)

Located in Boston on the east coast of England, Haven High Academy is an oversubscribed secondary that caters for over 1000 pupils between the ages of 11-16. With a less than positive Ofsted report, the senior leadership team were under pressure to bring about substantial improvements at the school, and a key area identified as having a negative effect on student outcomes was a serious lack of dining space.

As well as the dining hall being hard pressed to accommodate the students requiring school meals, an absence of covered space outside meant that during wet weather students had to remain in classrooms and corridors, creating acute staffing challenges as well as negatively impacting on key student outcomes.

Other schools within The Boston Witham Academies Federation had resolved similar issues by creating covered canopy areas, so an area at the front of the school was identified for redevelopment. Streetspace supplied an eye-catching Orion Conic Tensile Membrane Canopy in the trust’s colour scheme. This covers an area measuring 15.8m x 9.8m, providing a large covered space where students can eat and socialise.

The structure has a fixed-edge membrane with integrated guttering that discharges rainwater at ground level, ensuring as much of the space as possible can be utilised in wet weather. As well as carrying out the groundworks required for the structure, Streetspace were able to prepare and submit the planning application required for the development on the school’s behalf.

The completed canopy area is popular with students and has transformed the look of the school’s front elevation, giving a visible statement of the school’s continual investment in the health and wellbeing of students and staff.
