Haybridge High School, Stourbridge, West Midlands
Situated in the market town of Stourbridge in the West Midlands, Haybridge High School & Sixth-form is a mixed academy school, forming part of the Four Stones Multi-Academy Trust alongside the King Charles I School and The De Montfort School. Originally built on a greenfield site in 1976, Haybridge is part of the Schools, Students and Teachers (SSAT) Leading Edge Network.
With an existing courtyard already in use for outdoor dining, the school was looking to provide an area of covered space to make better use of the courtyard facility in inclement weather and provide protection for pupils from harmful UV rays in the summer months.
Through an initial consultation with subsequent site visits, the Streetspace team were able to survey the intended space for the new structure, securing key insight to understand the school’s ambitions for a covered outdoor dining facility.
A favourite for outdoor dining areas and social spaces, proposals were developed for a 14m x 11.6m TRITON Maxx steel frame canopy. Custom CGI layered over site photos helped generate an effective visual representation tailored to the school’s requirements, alongside a draft programme of works to aid the decision making process. With the structure designed to cover half the existing outdoor dining area and visually coordinate with the surrounding building facade, its advanced multiwall polycarbonate roofing would enable natural light to flow into the space.
Following a successful outcome of this process, a proposed date for the construction programme was set during the 2023 school summer holidays to avoid disruptions to school scheduling and ensure the new covered dining space would be ready for use for the new school year. The complete package for the project included full design, specification and manufacture, with installation and associated enabling works.
