Thomas Aveling School, Rochester
Streetspace are proud to have delivered a stunning courtyard redevelopment for Thomas Aveling School with four bespoke tensile canopies, including vertical infill panelling, providing comprehensive cover to the area.
The school faced multiple challenges. With buildings spread over a large area, most logical routes around the school involved outdoor links, meaning in wet weather corridors were highly congested as staff and students took alternative routes. In addition, a deficit of dedicated dining space was a major issue, especially during wet weather.
Proposals had been previously drawn up for the courtyard space, and with funds in hand for the project, Streetspace and other companies were approached to bid for the project, and the school were pleased with our proposal that involved creating two large level areas joined by steps and covered with a combination of four bespoke tensile membrane canopies, with vertical façade mesh panels providing full enclosure of the space.
The 1150m2 area is surfaced with block paving. LED lighting means the space can be used in the evening hours and is a safe circulation space especially during events like parent evenings. While the façade mesh panels allow airflow through the space, the school have commented that the area remains around 5 degrees warmer than the outside temperature in cold weather, and stays cooler during warmer weather.
Streetspace provided a full design and build package, acting as the main contractor, including design, groundworks, surfacing, and electrical works. In addition City3 7100 Series table benches were supplied, giving seating for a large number of pupils.
