Transforming a quiet space at Alexandra Park School

Alexandra Park school is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in the Muswell Hill area of the London borough of Haringey. It is situated on a five acre site, next to Oliver Tambo Park and surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Muswell Hill golf course, and is within sight of Alexandra Palace. Boasting a rich, diverse and harmonious culture, the school is committed to the moral, social, cultural and spiritual development for its current and future students, its motto being, ‘Success for all.’

The school was looking for a solution to upgrade an outside quiet seating area into a more usable covered space for students to use year-round, and create a covered spectators area overlooking the sports ground. Both structures needed to be functional for the students, providing shelter from the sun, as well as sufficient cover during inclement weather.

Streetspace worked with Alexandra Park School to achieve this by installing two 15m x 5m ORION Shield Tensile Canopies covering the seated quiet area, offering an aesthetically elegant feature, complimenting the surrounding architecture. With the attractive curved spine profile, the tensile structure offers consistent eaves height for excellent weather protection, and shading from the sun and UV rays. The soft membrane fabric diffuses natural light and offers excellent acoustic properties, absorbing a considerable proportion of noise and limiting sound pollution. The PVC architectural fabric is manufactured with a PVDF self cleaning top-lacquered layer, ensuring a highly durable, low maintenance surface. Coupled with the grey coating on the steel framework, the canopies complement the surrounding buildings.

Along with this, Streetspace also installed a 35m x 4.4m ORION Walkway Canopy above the spectators area, running along one side of the sports pitches. The PVC tensile membrane is perfect for use throughout the day providing shade from the sun, UV protection and cover from the rain; whilst the fabric membrane translucency creates a diffused, naturally lit space. ORION Barrel Vault Tensile Structures utilise a single piece of PVC fabric membrane, meaning no joins to attract dirt, whilst utilising the same PVDF surface coating to help reduce maintenance. Aluminium guttering and downpipes were added and finished to match the existing school colour scheme. Both of these canopy designs are available with a range of lighting solutions as well as radiant electric heaters, allowing use of covered spaces in the evenings and throughout the colder months.
