Back in February 2023, the Bohunt School in Worthing, West Sussex were looking to establish covered space for 2 areas on their school grounds, adapting under-utilised space on opposite sides of their existing sports hall. This would provide opportunities for outdoor dining and social activities, with a second space close to a multi-use games area (MUGA) requiring an enclosed structure that their PE department could utilise as a flexible classroom facility to supplement outdoor lessons.

An initial enquiry from the school was followed by a subsequent site visit, enabling the Streetscape team to gain crucial insight into the school’s ambitions for this project, evaluating available space in order to develop effective solutions.

As part of a tender process with the Bohunt Education Trust, design proposals were developed for 2no. ORION Barrel Vault-A fabric canopies, each with an asymmetric roof profile ideal for installation alongside buildings, alongside steelwork colour-coated to coordinate with details on the existing building facade. For the enclosed canopy, toughened glazing was integrated to the front elevation and side elevations into gables, giving the structure a contemporary feel. 2no. Fully glazed double doors to openings enable access to either side of the canopy.

With funding secured from the school’s trust, project works were able to commence during the 2023 school summer holidays. The completed package of works included design, specification and manufacture, as well as on-site installation and surfacing works. Following successful completion of the project, staff and students of Bohunt School have been putting the new covered spaces to good use, with positive feedback across the whole process from initial design through to final installation.
