Harris Academy Merton, Surrey

With a focus on helping students achieve success through the highest possible teaching standards, Harris Academy Merton has become a popular choice for secondary pupils in and around Mitcham in Surrey. With this popularity has come a surge in the school population – pushing the total intake by 300 to a body of 1500 students. While the Academy was in desperate need of additional space in their dining area to accommodate this rise in school student numbers, this had to be accomplished within strict budgetary parameters and with the minimum of disruption to the school’s operation.

Streetspace’s expert design team were delighted to work in concert with the school to achieve the expansion of the current dining area, with a specific brief to provide an external space which could be maintained under the same regime as the existing facilities. This was accomplished with our ZONE glazed structure providing a seamless transition to the Academy’s existing dining hall.

In order to fulfil our client’s specific requirements a fully sealed paved floor was laid, delivering a hardwearing, easy to clean and inexpensive surface solution.  Our designers utilised the monopitch rafter design with a Trisommet 40 composite roof panel system, integral guttering and PPCRAL6003 Sapphire Blue finish façade to the front and side elevations. Harris Academy Merton’s ZONE installation also featured Technalaluminium curtain walling with sliding and pivot doors for ventilation and general access respectively. Contemporary and energy efficient LED lighting and IR heaters were installed to provide a comfortable and ecologically conscious environment.

The Academy staff and pupils alike are thrilled with the finished dining room extension; the extra space offering a great deal more flexibility over the alternatives considered for both its intended and potential uses. In summary, The Academy’s Principal, Ms A Samad, told Streetspace: “We are delighted with this lovely extra dining space for our students; it looks great and was both quicker and cheaper than a traditional build.”
