Marston Vale Middle School, Bedfordshire

A member of the Chiltern Learning Trust, Marston Vale Middle School is located in Stewartby, Bedfordshire and provides a unique learning environment for its 600 pupils aged between 9 and 11 years old, with a culture of high aspirations, high expectations and success.

What was the project brief?

As part of an external works project for the Chiltern Learning Trust over three schools in Bedfordshire, the brief for Marston Vale Middle School involved the construction of a covered outdoor dining area with landscape area upgrades and external furniture. Project works were specified by AMR Consult on behalf of the trust.

What was the scope of work carried out?

An existing soft landscape area within the school, the initial phase of works required the removal of timber trim trail equipment along with associated paved footpaths. Following excavation to subgrade for the entire 440m2 of soft landscape area, the new canopy foundations and rainwater drainage were put in.

The 9m x 5m TRITON Maxx steel framed canopy with multiwall polycarbonate roofing system was delivered to site and installed. Once the canopy works were complete the recycled stone subbase was levelled and compacted ahead of the granite dressing layer and finally synthetic grass to the full 440m2 by our specialist surfacing contractors. Outdoor dining furniture and litter bins were also included within the scope of works.

The Streetspace project delivery model for the Marston Vale Middle School ensured that all aspects of the outdoor dining project from the detailed design and approval process, demolition of existing structures, excavations of foundations, drainage and subbase, canopy manufacture and fitting, installation of synthetic grass surfacing to the supply of external furniture were procured from a single-source with the same project management from start to finish.

This approach offers significant advantages for the school in reducing the burden of project management between different contractors and the coordination of a programme of works to deliver the project on time, within site specific health & safety and safeguarding requirements.
