The Herne Bay Pier Trust has been very active since 2013, having regenerated the pier into an attractive venue with a mix of retail huts, crafts, cafes and entertainment. They succeeded in winning funds from Meridian People’s Millions for an additional canopy and really wanted this tensile fabric structure to continue the theme of the existing pier buildings but to be iconic in its own right. This was an exciting challenge for the Streetspace team, and after trialling many different options, 3D visuals of the wave design theme met with their immediate approval.

The pier has a rich heritage dating back to 1831, when unfortunately O&M information with as-built drawings was not a statutory requirement! Not surprisingly, the actual construction of the Victorian pier deck was somewhat different to the available drawings – an interesting challenge for the Streetspace installation team.

Due to the harsh marine environment, the steelwork was hot dip galvanised followed by tri-resin coating. A planar glazing screen in laminated and toughened glass to separate the café from the walkway offers protection from the wind and provides an unobstructed view of the retail huts from the west side of the parade. The new structure is without doubt a fitting addition to the rich heritage of the Herne Bay Pier.
