Saffron Walden County High School, Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden County High School is a co-educational academy school for ages 11–18 in Saffron Walden, Essex, England. With over 2000 pupils on the school roll, it is larger than the average secondary school with a popular sixth form. The school has developed a growing sporting pedigree, particularly in Rugby Union, and has innovatively operated the only cinema in Saffron Walden, Saffron Screen, since 2006.
Their last Ofsted report in 2012 described Saffron Walden County High School as “an outstanding school providing an outstanding quality of education for all its students.” Their mission is be “a local school of exceptional quality”. Their aims include attaining standards of achievement which reflect the full potential of their students, providing the learning skills, habits and attitudes to tackle future challenges and maintaining a secure and caring community; encouraging respect and responsibility for all.
Streetspace Urban Structures were approached by the school to conceive and install a cohesive design for a covered dining area. This involved deploying underused space between two existing single story class rooms and the main building; capable of accommodating an additional 100 students.
After detailed consultation the school opted for a TRITON steel frame canopy structure, with an asymmetric profiled roof which offered superb shade and shelter dining space without compromising on natural light or impeding on access across the site. Our experienced team installed the 224m² covered dining space project just six weeks after receiving the final order. This coincided with the summer holidays to avoid minimal disruption to the students and staff.
Nick Lee, Premises Manager at Saffron Walden County High School, had this to say about the project:
“The new canopy looks great and the students are very excited to have this new dining space, but what has impressed us the most about working with Streetspace is the speed of installation. We sent a purchase order on the 22nd July and the structure was completed and handed over ready for use for the 1st September new term start date! This is no mean feat as it’s a big structure – 32m x 7m – and it included removing a grass area and paving over. The quality of workmanship is excellent, and the level of communication has been first class throughout. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Streetspace and we look forward to working with the team again.”
