Cockshut Hill School is a highly successful secondary school located in the historic Yardley area of Birmingham. As a member of the Ninestiles Teaching Schools group, Cockshut Hill is part of a group of primary, secondary and 6th Form colleges which actively promote excellence from both staff and students. With its core values of celebrating diversity, encouraging curiosity and fostering ambition, Cockshut Hill demonstrates the highest standards of teaching and learning

With a requirement to provide all-weather cover for the 105m length connecting two main school blocks, the project architects for Cockshut Hill School in Birmingham commissioned the Streetspace design team to provide a visually appealing, weather-protected walkway enabling a safe and easy pedestrian passage. An additional consideration was that due to the sloping nature of the site water would run downhill and freeze in the winter months, presenting a serious slip hazard which had led to closures in the past.

Following detailed design approval and a 3D CAD survey model, manufacture and installation of the 105m TRITON covered walkway commenced. The client specified radius roof design including full galvanised steel guttering polyester powder coated to match the canopy steel frame for optimum rainwater management. The addition of steel frame solid polycarbonate side panels ensure adequate protection from the elements across the most exposed areas of the playground.

The Streetspace design team took the time to understand those unique circumstances and conditions required for a successful project outcome with a projects team undertaking not only all foundations, surface water drainage and surfacing works but also the planning approval process. To eliminate any disruption to the school’s day to day operation all works were completed during the Spring half term period. The result is a high quality, safe and weather protected pedestrian passage between sites for staff and pupils, eliminating a problematic winter weather slip hazard that has led to the loss of valuable learning days in the past.
