Kingsford Community College, London
WILD Greenroof Canopies 2x 9000mm x 7500mm triangular structures
Kingsford Community College is very proud of its Specialist Language College and Confucius Classroom status, providing a distinctive and inspiring learning environment for its 1500 students, many of whom are from deprived backgrounds. Streetspace designed and built a landscaped memorial garden in one of the courtyards in 2010, replacing worn grass areas and tarmac paths with raised planters, greenroof canopies and resin bound surfacing to great effect. In fact it was so successful that when a covered area for an additional 100 dining spaces was required alongside a new catering pod in the playground, the Principal wouldn’t consider anything other than greenroof canopies from Streetspace.
The two stunning bespoke triangular structures are steel framed with timber cladding, supporting 64m2 of wildflower meadow – a valuable contribution to the biodiversity of East London as well as being visually appealing when viewed from upper floors of adjacent buildings. The requirement for ease of supervision of this alfresco dining space was met by enclosing the area with matching raised planters complete with mature shrubs, leaving just two entrances which could be cordoned off. The matching furniture and resin bound surfacing with contrasting colours has created an attractive all year round space which is robust enough to stand up to the demanding environment.
