Nishkam High School, Birmingham
Opened in September 2012, Nishkam High School in Birmingham is a multi-faith ethos school with a distinctive approach to education that focuses on 45 core virtues. Housing approximately 660 pupils from Year 7 through to sixth form, the school is 1 of 7 under the Nishkam School Trust.
Working alongside the team at Nishkam High School, Streetspace provided the design, installation and surfacing works for a TAURUS Glulam Timber Canopy, an increasingly popular alternative to steel engineered by bonding layers of softwood timber together with durable, moisture-resistant adhesives, ensuring a long-term lifespan.
Requiring a structure that could provide covered outdoor dining and social space, the visual appeal of the glulam canopy is supported with a clean design that integrates well with the surrounding environment, and was in-line with the school’s intention to incorporate a natural feel to the covered space.
Installed in an open courtyard environment with surrounding garden beds, the structure comprises feature glulam posts, coordinated steel base plates, eaves beams, and roof purlins. A 16mm triplewall polycarbonate roof allows for maximum light transmission through the canopy, providing a covered space with a natural, bright atmosphere. A high performance UV absorption layer co-extruded on the outer surface ensures maximum protection for pupils.
